De Gouden Engel is een oud huis met een lange en intensieve historie. Het werd in 1663 gebouwd als luxe patriciërswoning door mensen van stand, maar werd ruim twintig jaar later een bakkerij en zou dat bijna driehonderd jaar blijven van 1685 tot 1960.

Veel bakkersfamilies woonden en leefden hier. Het huis is gebouwd door vakmensen uit de 17e eeuw en in de loop van de geschiedenis uitgebreid en met liefde en gevoel voor historie onderhouden door diverse eigenaren. Overigens niet door iedereen. De basis van het huis is van steen met een prachtige houten kap, waarvan u volop kunt genieten. En als het 's avonds afkoelt en 's morgens opwarmt dan hoort u het hout kraken door de warmteveranderingen in het huis.

En soms hoort u - als u heerlijk zit te dineren in de dinerkamer - voetstappen op de eerste verdieping. Het effect van de flexibiliteit van een houten constructie. Of zijn het de voetstappen van Jelmers Grietje, naar wie het huis de Gouden Engel werd genoemd? Grietje die controleert of alles op orde is in haar huis, zoals dat ook was toen zij hier als bakkerse de scepter zwaaide?
