In 2018 is Leeuwarden-Fryslân de Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa. Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 gaat over dromen najagen door middel van culturele kruisbestuivingen. Cocktails van heden en verleden, mixen tussen stad en platteland, tussen wetenschappers en kunstenaars. Kunst is dus niet alleen het doel, maar juist het middel.

Daarom gaan veel projecten in 2018 kleurrijke inzichten en verstopte mogelijkheden voor een nieuwe toekomst van Fryslân en Europa: met moed, verbeelding en creativiteit kijken naar hoe Fryslân een duurzame toekomst tegemoet gaat. Als de dagelijkse ergernissen opzij worden gezet, komt het gesprek op waar het écht om gaat. Hoe gaan we met elkaar om? Is er plek voor elktsenien? Hebben we genoeg aandacht voor het klimaat? Voor biodiversiteit?

Fryslân zal in en na 2018 een laboratorium van vernieuwing zijn, waar samenwerken een nieuwe invulling krijgt. Alleen door nieuwe dingen te proberen, kun je veranderingen teweegbrengen. Want als je doet wat je altijd deed, krijg je wat je altijd kreeg.

In 2018 the city of Leeuwarden and the province of Fryslân are the European Capital City of Culture. Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 is about chasing dreams through cultural cross-pollination. Cocktails of the past and the present, mixing between city and countryside, between scientists and artists. Art is not just the goal, but the means.
 
That is why many projects in 2018 are about colorful insights and blocked opportunities for a new future of Fryslân and Europe: we are looking with courage, imagination and creativity look to a sustainable future for Fryslân. If the daily annoyances be put aside, the conversation can start on what really matters. How do we treat each other? Is there place for elktsenien (everybody in the Frisian language)? Do we have enough attention for the climate? For biodiversity?
 
Fryslân will be in and after 2018 a laboratory of innovation, where cooperation has a new meaning. Only by new things to try, you can bring about change. Because if you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got.
